Westford, MA Real Estate And Community Resources Guide

Westford is a small town that offers a peaceful residential environment amidst beautiful New England landscapes. The town, which was incorporated in 1729, was originally a farming community and later became known for its wool mills. Today it is home to several high-tech businesses, but its 21,000 residents still enjoy its rolling hills, lakes and apple orchards. In fact many homebuyers choose Westford because it provides a retreat from the hustle and bustle.

Westford’s peaceful setting is a standard feature of its properties. Its home styles, however, vary from classic colonials to new construction. Most are surrounded by woods and green landscapes, and there are many beautiful lakeside properties as well. As such buyers can expect most Westford properties to have large backyards and plenty of privacy. As for home prices, Westford’s 2010 mean and median single-family home sale prices were $457,799 and $465,000 respectively. Prices, however, varied far beyond these figures with the town’s lowest single-family home sale price at just $62,500 and its highest at $869,900.

Although Westford provides a great retreat from busy work and city life, it is conveniently located next to major highways and is just 25 miles northwest of Boston. Its location, which is in close proximity to many high-tech companies, is particularly attractive to homebuyers who work at high-tech firms west and northwest of Boston. Residents have direct access to two major highways, I-495 and route 3, to bring them to various points west and north of Boston. Westford also has convenient access to routes 2, 40, 119, and 225 for local travel. In addition residents enjoy a fifteen-minute drive to New Hampshire and are just a 50-minute commute from Boston.

Despite being a relatively small town, Westford employs a full-time fire and police staff and has a full-service public works department. All residents have curbside trash and recycling pickup, and the city handles all public maintenance, repairs and snow removal. In addition Westford has two water treatment facilities, which provide most of the town’s drinking water.

Westford Public School System is dedicated to providing the best education possible for its 5,000 students. In an effort to do this, the system has created a slightly different approach than most cities and towns. Instead of separating children into only a few larger schools with only three education levels—elementary, middle and high school—Westford separates its students into several smaller schools that represent four education levels and also an optional preschool level. Westford’s schools consist of one tuition-based preschool, three primary elementary schools (grades K-2), three upper elementary schools (grades 3-5), two middle schools, and one high school. Westford also has an additional career-oriented high school, the Nashoba Valley Technical High School.

Aside from striving for excellence in education, Westford seeks to build a strong community base for all of its residents. To do that Westford offers lots of public amenities. To begin the town maintains outdoor recreational spaces such as its two beaches, which provide residents access to clean spring-fed ponds. On top of recreational venues, the town maintains a busy schedule of programs for all ages through its library and recreation department. Between the two, they host everything from town sports leagues to extra-curricular classes. In addition Westford’s Cameron Senior Center provides special programs and services to senior residents. The senior center, which was fully renovated in 2010, now contains a dining room, gym, computer lab, several classrooms, a conference room, and many other features. It also provides a variety of free in-house and outreach services to improve the lives of Westford’s senior residents.

On top of town-run programs and services, the Roudenbush Community Center, which is a self-funded non-profit, provides a myriad of programs and services to Westford residents. Aside from the more typical recreational programs and enrichment classes residents expect from a community center, Roudenbush also offers childcare services, health clinics; and it houses its own art gallery.

Westford residents also enjoy other local attractions. One of the town’s most well-known attractions is Nashoba Valley Ski Area, which offers skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing in the winter and sponsors outdoor sports and events in the summer and fall. Another popular local attraction is Kimball Farm. Kimball Farm is open from spring to fall. It offers homemade ice cream, homestyle barbecue, mini golf, batting cages, and bumper boats. Westford is also home to the Butter Brook Golf Club, a gorgeous 210-acre golf course. For those looking for something a bit more educational, the Westford Historical Society operates the Westford Museum, which showcases an assortment of town artifacts and photographs. The museum also houses local genealogical information and materials.

In addition to the everyday activities and attractions available to residents, there are two noteworthy annual community events: The Apple Blossom Festival and The Strawberry Festival. The Westford Kiwanis sponsor the town’s Apple Blossom Festival every May. This festival is a four-day celebration of the town apple orchards blossoming. It includes a pancake breakfast, a parade, a carnival, and live entertainment. The town’s Strawberry Festival is held each year in June and features art, entertainment and food. Festival organizers pride themselves in providing all attendees with the festival’s classic dish, strawberry shortcake.

Homebuyers who are looking for a small town that emphasizes community yet offers plenty of privacy and natural beauty should consider Westford. This friendly town has a lot to offer its residents.
